What to Wear to Any Type of Summer Wedding

what to wear to a summer wedding

Nate and I had the pleasure of visiting the newly remodeled David’s Bridal at Altamonte Springs and I have to say–it’s absolutely incredible. I mean, like this is the kind of thing I’m almost mad about because I didn’t get to have this experience when I was buying my bridal gown at David’s Bridal two years ago! If you live in the vicinity of Orlando (and honestly if you don’t, it’s worth the drive) and are in the market for any type of formal or semi-formal gown, give it a whirl, you won’t be disappointed. I had a blast trying on 10 different looks and put together a guide with different options to help you navigate all those summer weddings!

I knew it was new the moment we were rolling up and I parked the car. The sign was so fresh and gorgeous and the display window was long and decorated in a way that made me think I was walking the streets of Manhattan. The second we walked in, three ladies immediately came to introduce themselves, and Lisa (who helped me the entire time) was truly a doll. To the left was an insanely well-lit showroom organized by designer and style. With mod gray and white decor, the place looked chic, updated, clean, and spacious. None of this “cramming it all in” BS you tend to see when you shop stores like this. Everything was so nicely organized and spaced out, I was honestly amazed.

To the right lived the special occasion dresses: everything from prom to mother of the bride and everything in between. The sheer organization of the place astounded Nate and I. It was like walking into a chic NYC designer bridal boutique.

One of the coolest parts about this new store was the dressing room area. Seriously, guys: they had mirrors with daylight bulbs to simulate what you might look like outside/in photos. I mean, what store does that?! The chairs for people accompanying you to try on were nicely lined up and divided so that the brides/guests could have privacy. The dressing room I was in was absolutely GIGANTIC. So much room for activities! Haha!

There’s even a separate room just for trying on shoes. They’re nicely organized and have their own mirrors for this room. The open floor plan also has separate rooms for jewelry/accessories and all sorts of super cute bridal gear: I’m talkin’ “bride” robes, pajamas, bachelorette party items, tanks to wear on your honeymoon and tons else. The selection is out of control. Not gunna lie, I’m probably going back to get the “wifey” pajamas–they’re adorable!

Other than how accommodating the staff was, I think the thing that impressed me most about this new store was the layout and organization of everything. It didn’t feel like a department store with rows and rows of dresses you had to sort through like you were clearance shopping. Each style had its own section and time in the sun. Everything was so easy to find and out in the open.

Now for the most fun part–trying on the awesome dresses! Summertime means wedding prime time in most circles and so I thought it only fitting (ha) to investigate all that David’s Bridal had to offer in terms of what to wear to a summer wedding! With all the amazing organization in store, it was extremely easy to pick through what I just had to try on! I even grabbed two different pairs of hot heels to switch out when trying on the different dresses.

Their selection definitely DID NOT disappoint! From feeling like a mermaid in the mint one below to just having to twirl in the Carrie Bradshaw-esque tulle skirt two piece set–I was having a grand old time dancing around in front of those HUGE mirrors!

See below for my guides to what to wear to a summer wedding from formal to semi-formal and casual! Let me know which is your favorite!

Attending a formal wedding doesn’t mean you automatically have to wear a boring black floor length gown. I mean, sure, black is usually every woman’s go-to due to its ability to slim, but there are so many more options nowadays that fit & flatter AND have a little color and pizzazz! One of the trend this summer that I noticed was the nude/crystal-embellished top and colorful bottom. Very flattering for any skin tone! When I tried on this pale blue number, Lisa (my helper) told me it’s got that “Cinderella” vibe and I have to agree–I loved it for that reason! I felt like a real life princess! I especially liked the high-low action going on that allowed my shoes to take center stage. I have to say, however, that my favorite was the pink skirted one because it’s just so glamorous! The silky tie in the back cinches the waist and the lace on top was so breathable.

Like Lisa told me, I noticed that one of the more prevalent trends this season in dresses was the two piece set. A huge fan of the crop top, this trend is definitely my jam! The pink top with colorful jewels around the color was a super fun way to dress up its black tulle counterpart. It was definitely a “twirler”! The black and gray floral-skirted dress is actually a two piece set as well! With just a peak of belly showing (really only when you lift your arms), it’s really flattering. I loved this one! The nude strapless dress was a classic and super comfortable. I could see this breezy piece being a go-to for any body type (with the right support). My favorite in this bunch would have to be the LBD. Its curve-hugging silhouette made me look super muscular so I was a fan! The little sheer cut-outs were a cool illusion to cinch the waist.

These last two could definitely work for a semi-formal wedding as well but I felt that they had just enough of a casual vibe to plop them in the “casual summer wedding” category. Because, let’s get real: you’d rather be overdressed than under-dressed; am I right? The little lacy number is super cute and modern with its sheer top half and cap sleeves with the other flatters a pear shape with its fit and flare style (with just the right amount of a pop of color!).
