Lace Up Dress & DIY patch jacket

Jumping on bandwagons isn’t usually my style, and to be honest–I wasn’t really down for this “patchwork” trend to begin with–but when the thought of a DIY project that I could actually do myself  popped up I knew I had to give it a shot.

This dress  has been my go-to uniform this summer for so many different occasions. From Disney trips to dinner dates, it really has come in handy. My favorite feature is the trendy lace up in the front. It adds a little extra “something” to a typical black dress.

Inspired by I SPY DIY’s project, I decided to create my own rendition. I originally wanted to go with jeans for this project, but decided on a jacket instead; I just felt like I’d get to pair it with more. First item of business? Finding patches that I could work with.

Unfortunately, since I wanted to make my jacket before we went on our trip to Miami, I had only a few days to complete my project. That being said, I really only had local stores to choose from for my ultimate “patch destination”. Some scores on Etsy were too amazing to pass up (so I plan to order them to add to this later) like this pineapple , cactus, and “cheers” patch.

However, since time was on a crunch, I had to resort to my local Michaels and Hobby Lobby stores– which weren’t so bad as it turns out! I took a cue from this pin  and fell in love with the little fun words on the back. Enter my “super” patch.

After that, I delved into the personalization aspect of the project, and couldn’t help but ransack the sports, initials, cartoons, and sweets parts of the aisle! Maybe it’s juvenile, but I was loving the “smack”, “boom”, and “pow” patches–they’re so fun! I love the idea that with this type of trend, you can create your own style and personalize it to the things you like and who you are (even though I totally fake puked when I first saw the trend in Zara a few months ago). I guess fashion can make you eat your words sometimes!

I am loving that dress! I’m really liking the lace-up trend. And that patchwork denim jacket is perfection! The customization is so fun!
