How to Wear Floral Shorts 3 Ways

I’m one of those people who don’t buy something unless I can picture 3 different ways I can wear it. From what I hear, a lot of you can relate! And so, in light of this info, I would love to share with you my take on styling floral shorts 3 different ways! I know these babies are so versatile but sometimes they can be a bit intimidating because a) they’re usually a crazy print and b) they often come bearing tons of different colors! No worries! I feel like you can have even more creative liberty in styling these (if you can believe it!) because they’re a little crazy!

The first way I immediately gravitated toward styling them would be to pull out one of the bright colors featured in the shorts and sport it as a blouse! It may seem off the beaten path, but this neon green/yellow boho-type top goes with a lot more than you think! I wear mine with regular jeans and fun heels or with printed shorts or tucked into a high-waisted skirt.

This formula of COLORFUL FLORAL SHORTS + BRIGHTLY COLORED COMPLEMENTARY TOP works for pretty much anything you wear. Don’t feel like you have to stick to a boring neutral just to make these babies stand out–go for a top with a punchy color that you find in the shorts and you’ll get an unexpectedly fun outfit!

The second way I styled this outfit goes back to my roots–gingham. Yeah, yeah, yeah I know that I wear gingham all the time and have been for quite some time now, but I gotta tell ya guys–it just works. This classic pattern will forever be in style and what’s even more fun is that button down shirts in gingham come in so many different colors nowadays and you can thrift them because they’ve been in style for so long now.

Yep, you guessed it–I thrifted this one. I’m proud to say I scooped this up for under $10 literally 8 years ago (plus it’s J Crew so BONUS!). You can find plenty of comparable shirts like this in stores now, but if you really want to save money, scour your local second hand store. At one point, I think I had a farm of these types of shirts growing in my closet. I ain’t mad about it.

It may seem scary, again, to pair such a bright and complex print as a floral short, for example, but as long as you stick to a comparable color scheme–you’re fine. I love to (big shocker) mix prints–in fact, me and print mixing have been having a love affair ever since I flipped to the concept in a StyleWatch magazine in 2011. It’s been 6 years, I guess you could say it’s getting pretty serious.

Anyway, print mixing is still very much on the horizon. A bright pink like this one wakes up an outfit, making it perfect for summer!

The third way I styled these shorts married “trendy” with “classic”. This one highlights my love for both pops of color and print mixing. This striped blouse is from H&M and I believe you can still find it in stores for under $20. I have the gingham version too (of course I do) and have styled it this way. Big bright layered and beaded necklaces like this one have become an obsession for me lately as I think it kind of “classes” an outfit up a bit. In my opinion, it makes an outfit look a bit more polished when you add something like this.

The same print mixing concept I mentioned earlier applies to this outfit as well. I pulled the blue from the print in the shorts and used it in the blouse while coupling it with a trend that’s hot right now–ruffles. I mean, I’m not one for the “little house on the prairie”  look, but somehow these ruffles seem more modern. Maybe I’m fooling myself, but for the time being–I’m into it.

I argued with myself over whether or not to pair the top and shorts with these loafers or a pair of sandals. When you get dressed in the summer, perhaps your first “shoe thought” would be to gravitate toward any type of sandal over a closed-toe shoe, but I had to ignore my instincts and go outside the box on this one. Since I was going for a more eclectic-preppy look here,  I knew I had to ground the outfit with a neutral and I often wear these suede loafers without socks, so it didn’t seem like a stretch to pair them with shorts. At the end of the day, I have to say I liked this outfit best because I challenged myself when I put it together.

What do you think? Are you feelin’ floral shorts this summer? Which look is your favorite?

The third is my favorite of all three! I feel like you could totally do like a cute sperry topsider as well for the shoes. I love that shell bag! So adorable! I really like the pop of color with the necklace too!

I am the same way! Unless it’s multipurpose, I’m not interested. Love how you made three outfits with one pair of shorts!
