Best Friend Gifting

best friend gifting with marshalls

Those who know me know that I miss home terribly most of the time. Much of that reason lies in the absence of my family and close friends. One friend in particular who has been there for me through the good and the bad over the past 6 years has been my best friend Kristen.

She and I met in the most peculiar way. When I lived in my hometown of North East, Pennsylvania we had a little tanning salon that was the best in the area and they always had coupons for awesome deals on services other places robbed us blind for.

Yes, it’s embarassing, but when I looked in the paper one day I found a coupon for a free spray tan and I thought to myself, “Okay, what the heck, what’s the worst that could happen”. I’d never gotten such a thing done, but was always curious because it seemed like celebrities were doing this on a regular basis and they always looked gorgeous.

So, I make an appointment for no reason in particular (I had no event or anything, was just bored I guess and wanted to try) and show up on a random winter day. I walk in and see Kristen, who was the manager, all smiles and I immediately recognized her. She was one of my brother’s best friends in high school whom he always spoke about. He’d tell me how fun she was and how she was always happy, but I never got the chance to meet her because when she transferred to PA from Texas, I was always in college.

So, she starts spray tanning me half-naked and naturally I’m completely awkward and trying to make small talk because this girl I don’t know is seeing my pretty much everything, and the whole time she’s doing this she was so incredibly sweet and professional. We started talking about how my family was taking a trip to Vegas and she gave me tips on what to see and do. We moved on to talk about my brother and the crazy times they had back in high school.

Soon after, I got a part-time job at the salon while I worked through my graduate degree and we starting hanging out after work. Who knew that such a random meeting would yield the most incredible friendship… We’ve seen each other through grad school, engagements, weddings, parties, new jobs, moving, and so much more. I truly couldn’t ask for a better friend than she’s been to me over the past 6 years. And for that, I wanted to surprise her this Christmas with one of the best gifts that I know we both enjoy–shopping, of course! We used to (okay…we still do)  make jokes about how we would shop and then hide it so that no one would find out the damage we’ve done. I still laugh about it everytime I’m with her.

This past week, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving week with my family and friends back up north in Pennsylvania. During which, I was stoked to be able to spend as much time as I could with Kristen. A couple days into the break, I surprised her with a gift card to Marshalls for $250 and joined her on a holiday shopping spree!

We were overwhelmed at all of the fun holiday-themed options and surprised to see how many adorable home decor options the store now held in addition to our usual fashion rounds. Some of our favorites, of course, were the chic gold Christmas decorations for the home and office and the gorgeous holiday dresses! She found an adorable black lace version, perfect for an office party!

I found a new pair of oxford flats perfect for dinner gathering as well as the old 9-5’er. Plus, they were on sale for $38…umm, I’ll take 2 thank you very much! We found so many home decorations, this cute sleeveless white sweater (perfect for a stylish wintery outfit) for $10, adorable and on-trend tan leather booties, and this unbelievable Kate Spade purse in this fun & bright shade of red!

I’m so lucky to have a best friend like her and sharing this shopping experience together around the holidays was such a rewarding experience; especially now, when we hardly get to see each other! Being so far away is hard!

Pass on a surprise to someone special in your life! Take them on a shopping spree to Marshalls! Trust me, the experience was a blast and getting the gift you really want is always the right choice 🙂
